I found MS Doesn't Define Me to be an inspiring and honest read. What I liked most was how Patti Bevilacqua shared her experiences without making the book feel like a simple story about illness. It shows how challenges can change your perspective, while still reminding you that they don't have to define who you are. Some parts felt a little detailed, but overall, I enjoyed the message about resilience, finding purpose, and continuing to live life on your own terms.

I was completely unprepared for the emotional shock wave caused by MS does NOT define ME, a memoir that refuses to soften the blow of pain so it can be seen as beautiful (and therefore easy to digest), instead inviting the reader into an unromanticized and fierce process of rebirth and finding their identity again after disaster. Bevilacqua's writing is confessional, unfiltered -she writes like she no longer cares about coming across as "literary", only wants to be heard - and I liked that some of her sentences sprawled out and looped around each other, mimicking the chaotic and non-linear experience of living with a chronic illness. At first, I had reservations about the structure of the book moving from memoir sections to reflective section breaks but eventually I appreciated them because they became opportunities to take breaths, to sit and absorb what I had just read and to ask myself the same difficult questions she was asking. Her voice is both warm, strong, and sometimes exhausting in a good way She never gives herself an excuse, nor romanticizes her pain but insists with absolute certainty that joy and purpose are still possible. One of the most astounding things I have ever read was the chapter about when she learned the placebo effect was real and that her miraculous infusion was actually nothing more than saline. Then watched her turn that betrayal into amazement at how powerful her own mind truly is. That left me emotionally affected. I also liked how she portrayed her own defensiveness and irrationality It made her eventual growth seem more genuine and less performance-based. This book provided me with a vocabulary for experiencing invisible struggles I did not even realize I needed And I felt less alone in my uncertainty when I finished reading this book. Bevilacqua's literary style in "MS doesn't define ME" is not what makes it linger - it's its untimidating exploration of who we are when we lose and gain ourselves. Bevilacqua's main argument that a chronic diagnosis will take away your personhood but demand you negotiate it again with honesty that feels almost risk-takingly vulnerable. The book's thematic structure is ambitious: grief cycles; the placebo effect as proof of mind-body relationship; advocacy as both public and private acts; and the radical reduction of success from productivity metrics to anything else. Each chapter circles these ideas with the persistence of someone still processing their own transformation which adds an authenticity to this book that some carefully written memoirs may lack. The scene where Bevilacqua discovers she received placebo in the clinical trial is the theme heart of the book she should feel betrayed yet she experiences wonder at her own mind's power. It is a truly surprising emotional pivot that re-frames everything preceding it. Less sucessful is how the book treats spiritual and alternative healing, which occasionally drifts into vague wellness language that obscures more than it illuminates. Bevilacqua is at her thmatic best when she is specific about something: the garden-glove analogy for neuropathy, the escalator image of descending towards family, the idea that advocacy sometimes just means not apologizing for needing rest. I found myself deeply moved by her assertion that vulnerability is not weakness but is the fundamental base of true connection a statement she doesn't just make, but shows through her willingness to share her most shameful moments. The book ultimately argues that thriving is not the absence of limitation, but the creative dance within those limitations.

- Katherine Anne Davis - Goodreads

This raw, vulnerable memoir traces Patti Bevilacqua's abrupt shift from energetic PE teacher and athlete to living with MS. The early chapters powerfully capture the shock of diagnosis, identity loss, depression, and forced career change with unflinching honesty. Readers facing chronic illness or sudden life upheaval will find resonance in her grief and gradual resilience. While the emotional intensity can feel heavy and somewhat repetitive at times, the authenticity and reflective prompts make it a sincere, encouraging read for those navigating similar storms.

MS Doesn't Define ME: The Biography of a Polymath is a powerful and inspiring story about resilience, determination, and refusing to allow a diagnosis to become the definition of who you are. found the story both encouraging and thought-provoking. I laugh in the face of fatigue" - My new mantra Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2026 Format: Kindle MS Doesn't Define ME: The Biography of a Polymath by Patti Bevilacqua is a powerful story of sadness, uncertainty, triumph, success, resilience, and, most importantly, the incredible power of the mind. Receiving a diagnosis of MS brought Patti face-to-face with the fear of an unknown future, but what inspired me most was how she refused to allow that diagnosis to define who she was or what she could accomplish. One passage that really stayed with me was: "It was then, in the darkness, that I felt the sheer weight of not having control over my future... Why me?... But that night, I asked it anyway." There is something so raw and relatable about those words. Sometimes life hands us circumstances we never expected, and asking "Why me?" can be part of processing everything that has suddenly changed. Then there is the line I absolutely loved: "I laugh in the face of fatigue." That one is going to become a new mantra for me! It's short, powerful, and says so much about refusing to surrender your spirit when your body presents challenges. Chapter 10, "Give Yourself Grace: From Surviving to Thriving," was especially powerful for me. The idea of giving ourselves grace while still moving forward is something I think many people need to hear. There is a huge difference between simply surviving what life throws at us and learning how to thrive despite it. Patti's journey is inspiring because this isn't simply a story about MS. It is a story about a woman, her accomplishments, her determination, and her refusal to be reduced to a diagnosis. I also really appreciate the reflection section and look forward to answering the questions and seeing what they bring out in me personally. A moving and empowering five-star read that reminds us that a diagnosis may become part of our story, but it does not have to become our entire identity.

- Connie Newell - Amazon

The book doesn't pretend that everything becomes easy, which makes its message of hope feel genuine. Overall, it's a thoughtful and encouraging read about resilience, grace, and finding new ways to move forward. I would recommend it to anyone going through a major life change and learning how to redefine what moving forward means.
